This new body of work consists of haphazardly composed, gestural abstractions created from previously unexplored materials. Reworked armatures and recycled materials from older works have been combined with wire, rocks, papier-mache, and other simple materials to result in an exploration of spontaneity and personal history.

Exhibition: ALEXANDER GORLIZKI / Soft Succulent Sublime

October 31 - December 19, 2009

Alexander Gorlizkis' works on paper originate from an obsession with Indian Miniature paintings, a tradition he has subverted and applied to his own idiosyncratic visual language. He creates compositions embedded with irony and humour, to images that can be simultaneously compelling and unnerving. Following Joseph Albers' dictum that "one plus one equals three," the artist draws together apparently disparate elements that create a third entity, greater than the sum of its parts.

In the mid 1990's, Gorlizki established a studio in Jaipur, India. Gorlizki initiates the conceptual design and collaborates with Uddin and other members of the atelier who apply jewel-colored pigments, stone colors and gold-leaf using single-hair-tipped brushes to complete the works of breathtaking intricacy.

Exhibition: VICTORIA GITMAN

September 12 - October 24, 2009

Daniel Weinberg Gallery is pleased to announce our third solo exhibition with Victoria Gitman. This new selection of work will feature "The Beauties", drawings and paintings depicting re-creations of Old Master portraits, and the "On Display" series, impeccably detailed paintings of antique purses and ephemera.

"The Beauties" are a series of small portraits based on the works of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Gitman meticulously re-creates the originals through a slow-motion process, turning the immediacy of Ingres' studies into deliberate, almost fetishistic, paintings and graphite drawings. Viewing of the works mimics the process; each requires close examination, creating a courtship between the work displayed and the viewer. "The Beauties" are a study in perception of beauty and femininity, materiality and illusion, and subject and image.

"On Display" presents vintage fashion accessories reproduced with taxonomic precision. In this new body of work, beaded purses (in a change from previous paintings, each is colorful rather than all-white) are composed of intricate geometric patterns. When viewed from a distance, the minute details blend into solid blocks of color and shape, evoking theories of modern abstraction. Although void of personal belongings, each purse is filled with social, symbolic, and personal historical meaning. Gitman works painstakingly on each painting, creating the work bead-by-bead in a labor that mirrors that of the creation of the actual object.

Exhibition: CHRIS MARTIN, ANDREW MASULLO, JAMES SIENA, MICHAEL TETHEROW / Paintings

June 13 - August 22, 2009

Opens Saturday, July 11, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

CHRIS MARTIN, Thursday, 1988-2007

    Oil on canvas, 22 1/4" x 18"

Chris Martin's multi-media paintings are influenced by rock music, philosophy and religion, and the tradition of an entire generation of American abstractionists. This exhibition will feature a new series of smaller-scaled versions of his visionary and diagrammatic works.

The small, candy-colored oil paintings created by Andrew Masullo are defined by their obsessive, yet endearingly imperfect, geometry. Daniel Weinberg Gallery recently presented Masullo's twenty-fifth solo show, and this exhibition will feature a group of his recent works.

James Siena's enamel paintings on aluminum are comprised of systems of repeating markings and linework. The individual brushstrokes combine to create complex abstract designs based on algorithms and patterns.

At first appearing to be blocks of heavily-painted color, Michael Tetherow's paintings actually function as highly abstracted portraits. This selection of paintings, completed in the 1970s, brings humanness and humor to formality.

Exhibition: STEVE GIANAKOS / Works on Paper

June 13 - August 22, 2009

Opens Saturday, July 11, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

STEVE GIANAKOS, Her Hair Dresser..., 2009

    Collage on paper, 35" x 29"

The works on paper created by Steve Gianakos are rife with contrasting themes of vulgarity, sophistication, humor, and innocence. His montages, made up of obscure cartoon graphics, are realized through printmaking and haphazard paint application on patched pieces of paper. The surrealistic juxtaposition of imagery forces the viewer to confront themes of eroticism, popular culture, and parody.

Exhibition: SANDRA VASQUEZ DE LA HORRA / Confesiones de una Musa

April 25 - May 23, 2009

The work of Sandra Vásquez de la Horra is deeply emotional and autobiographical. Enveloped in yellowed wax, her graphite works present themes of persecution, abandonment, religion, sex, language, and culture. Although the drawings are singular works, Vásquez de la Horra's eclectic salon-style installations lead the viewer to link them and create a personal history. Each waxed drawing has a dreamlike quality which contrasts with the dark, and sometimes explicit, subject matter.

We emailed Andrew Masullo, asking what information he would like included in the press release for his upcoming show. Here are his suggestions, left as is:

"Just think of all the things usually found in a press release and do the opposite. Mention very little, no interpretations or anything. Make it understated. A short summary of the paintings could be something like this: "He painted them."

This exhibition marks Andrew Masullo's twenty-fifth solo show.

"My work has long been compelled with looking at the porosity in socially created parameters; the political as geographical boundaries, or the psychological as in familial constructs, or the intimate and private relams of our soma. Zoonatics, as I'm using them now, represent vehicles of fluidity. They are microorganisms as travelers who are adept at wandering across distinct borders, persevering and going often unnoticed until well settled in foreign territories. They are threatening and peculiar mediums of equalization, engaging their unwitting, unrelated objects of desire in cryptic states of communion."

Although Ralph Humphrey began exhibiting in 1957 at a moment that seemed to mark the beginning of the art world's turn toward Minimalism and Pop Art, he never became an orthodox practitioner of either style. By the mid 60's, however, Humphrey abandoned the allover gestural paintings with which he inaugurated his career, and had come to be considered, along with Brice Marden, a "romantic Minimalist." In retrospect, these breakthrough paintings not only reveal the artist establishing the foundation for subsequent efforts, but they also underscore his commitment to the possibilities of abstraction.

Jonathan Herder focuses on the raw material of dissected postage stamps, which stems from the artist's "desire to liberate the stamp's graphic potency from the mundane confines of bureaucratic purpose." He sometimes includes other official currencies such as bank notes and stock certificates. He elevates the character of their common materials from opaque utility to delicate ethereality.

Exhibition: ALEXANDER GORLIZKI / STRANGE YOU CAN BELIEVE IN

March 22 - April 19, 2008

Alexander Gorlizkis' works on paper originate from an obsession with Indian Miniature paintings, a tradition he has subverted and applied to his own idiosyncratic visual language. He creates compositions embedded with irony and humour, to images that can be simultaneously compelling and unnerving. Following Joseph Albers' dictum that "one plus one equals three," the artist draws together apparently disparate elements that create a third entity, greater than the sum of its parts.

In the mid 1990's, Gorlizki established a studio in Jaipur, India. He partnered with Riyaz Uddin, a master painter whose techniques originated over 600 years ago. Gorlizki initiates the conceptual design, and collaborates with Uddin and other members of the atelier who apply jewel-colored pigments, stone colors and gold-leaf using single-hair-tipped brushes to complete the works of breathtaking intricacy.

Exhibition: TAVARES STRACHAN / A HUNDRED YEARS

February 16 - March 15, 2008

This exhibition is an extension and continuation of the artist's The Distance Between What We Have and What We Want project, which was inspired in part by Matthew Henson, the African-American explorer who in 1909 traveled to the North Pole with Robert Peary.

In March 2005, with the help of a skilled team, Strachan traveled to the Alaskan Arctic, where he extracted a 4.5 ton cube of ice from a frozen river. He then shipped the ice block to his birthplace of Nassau, Bahamas, where it was exhibited in a solar-powered glass and steel display box designed in collaboration with a team of engineers from MIT. Transforming its destructive power, the artist harnessed the energy of the tropical sun to create a stable, homeostatic environment for this grand performance of cultural and geological displacement.

Upon arrival in the Bahamas, Strachan initiated a series of performances and lectures related to the ice block piece. Visiting public schools, he used the sculpture as a jumping off point to engage the young students of his hometown in acts of contemporary mythmaking, exploring the ideas and implications of heroic performance, cultural displacement and global climate change.

Expanding on the ideas and themes he touched on in the first phase of Distance Between, Strachan has created a new and related body of work for his exhibition at Daniel Weinberg Gallery. The exhibition will include a series of castings of objects referencing his trek to Alaska and return to the Bahamas, including grade school desks and chairs, ice boots with crampons, walking sticks and foul weather gear. The objects are cast in graphite, chalk, beeswax and honey, referencing the entropic geological and environmental conditions of the places in which they were conceived.

Additional sculptural works will include a half-ton limestone boulder extracted from the Bahamas and a honey and beeswax encrusted version of the arctic expedition uniform from Strachan's Alaska excursion of 2005. Also included in the exhibition will be a presentation of several video pieces and photographs related to the performance of the ice extraction, as well as a live data feed from the Alaskan site.

Tavares Strachan was born in Nassau, Bahamas. He holds a BFA (Glass) from the Rhode Island School of Design (2003) and an MFA (Sculpture) from Yale University (2006).

Exhibition: ANDREW MASULLO / PAINTINGS 1992-2007

September 8 - October 13, 2007

"For two decades now, Andrew Masullo, who lived in New York for almost 20 years and now resides in San Francisco, has been delighting color lovers and picture mavens with his pleasurable paintings.

He thinks pink. And turquoise. And green. And he thinks about mirrors and borders and patterns and symmetry. In his work, pretty is an abstract concept. It's what you think about when you see bright colors, crisp lines, and nice chunky paint in thick globs that look like candy.

All so unlike grunge, not pathetic but sympathetic. Not abject but subject. A grand subject which is the world as shape, the world as plaything in big pieces you can hold in your hand. Parts of a puzzle that isn't puzzling at all but is available as squiggles, dashes, dots, and scallops.

Not inscrutable doodles. Not casual like Mary Heilmann or coy like Richard Tuttle, but deliberate, intuitive, and profound like Florine Stettheimer, Forrest Bess, and Hans Arp. Funnier and more off-kilter than Thomas Nozkowski. Form found in nature and in food and in plastic toys and shaped cakes. The shape of things to come and of things that once were.

Not one vortex but two, spinning earlier and deeper than a Mark Grotjahn (No. 3216, 1996). A day-glo nougat Petri-dish (No. 3786, 1999). Fat textured wiggles making purple and green patchwork (No. 3160, 1996). A slab of Crayola-mad terrazzo (No. 3520, 1999-2000). Paul Feeley dingbats magnified, multiplied, and more than a little bit funky (No. 3271, 1997). A color wheel with all the depressing huesleft out (No. 2811, 1992).

His grids are tipsy, geometry a bit wonky. The correct kind of clumsy, sophisticated and chic like the right shade of red. Not twee - Laura Owens is twee - but fancifully tough in the way that Veronica Lake or Lewis Carroll's Alice is tough. There are rules in these paintings but the rules break. No strict patterns, please. We don't really like repetition. Color inside the lines. Keep things small. And please take more than one.

We live in drab times. Mr. Masullo's paintings are little miracles."

A 2006 MFA graduate from London's Royal College of Art, the British artist's first solo exhibition in Los Angeles will feature drawings on paper and board, composed entirely of pluses (+) and minuses (-) to evoke a binary process of recording images. Using a range of graphite pencils of varying hardness to indicate shape and depth, Richardson crafts images from memory which evoke orbs, voids, constellations, amoebic forms, webs, matrixes and binary data streams. Through a strict, minimal mark-making practice, the artist creates a seemingly endless variety of elemental forms, each of which present an undefined, meditative space for reflection.

"The object's being does not lie at all in the material of which it consists but in the void that it holds. It is within this void that the image resides. My work aims to draw this void into existence, where nothing becomes something, the edge. The visual object has the capacity to articulate an image beyond the naming of it, a presence that does not separate the subject and object but allows the viewer to be in the space between."
